Liebre Mountain Road
A ride of 2011:03:10. Liebre Mountain Road is the same as Maxwell Road and Sawmill Mountain Road, but even further along. From west to east, Liebre Mountain Road (this album), Sawmill Mountain Road, and Maxwell Road are actually the same road, running through the mountains south of the Mojave between the 5 and Lake Elizabeth (following the San Andreas Fault), visited from three different entry points.
We parked at the start of the historic Old Ridge Route, rode about two miles south on it and turned up the hill on Liebre Mountain Road (the 7N23, clearly marked). We went a total of about 15 miles, travelling east to the same point that was the furthest west we’d reached on our previous trip (Sawmill Mtn Rd). This GPS track was taken on the return trip.
Elevation and, just as a curiosity, speed as a function of distance on the return trip (so, east to west). The middle part gives a fair sense of how I (Matt) ride, puttering along at about 20 mph, slowing a bit for turns and when the sun gets in my eyes, and with occasional stops for photos, chatting, etc. (The last part doesn’t count because we were on paved road.)

Snow on the Los Padres; Los Angeles and San Bernardino are on the other side of those mountains.

Since we’re following a ridge, sometimes we have a view north, as here. Looking across the Mojave at the Tehachapis; the next couple of pictures look further and further east, towards Edwards Air Force Base.

Our furthest point on this trip: the intersection with the road to Atmore Meadows. Since we reached this point and visited Atmore Meadows on our previous trip here (Sawmill Mtn Road), we have now hooked up with our past selves and have travelled the entirety of this road, though not on the same day.

We couldn’t resist stopping for photos at a place where there’s still snow in the shadows.
