El Mirage

A dirt bike ride from 2012-04-08, with John and Kyle. El Mirage is about as far away from Santa Barbara and Ojai as we can go in a morning, ride around for a while, and come back the same day. It’s a beautifully laid out area, maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, and it’s really a privilege to be allowed to explore its rocky outcrops on a dirt bike, as well to nip across the dry lake bed and pretend you’re competing for a land speed record. The day we visited was Easter, and the place was almost deserted (to coin a phrase). Note scatterings of snow still visible on the mountains.

This photo really shows what I think is lovely about the desert: sparse, open, dramatic.

Another truly representative desert shot. And doesn’t the dirt track look inviting?
