Camuesa Road

We rode (2008:04:06) up from Upper Oso to the saddle where the roads fork and took the right fork down into the river area. This was the second time we’d been there, and the road had been beautifully restored. But I (Matt) balked at the last river crossing so we stopped and ate lunch and took pictures instead. This is the same ride shown here: Upper Oso to Camuesa It remains a favorite because it is close to Santa Barbara and is usually open. It is tremendously varied (though you can’t tell that from just these photos) and I never get tired of it.

It was still very early days for our dirt bike riding. We still had the Honda, and it wasn’t particularly well set up yet. Later I got a new seat for it, put bark busters on it, and completely replaced that annoying huge tail-light assembly with something more enduro-style.

This shows the water crossing that stopped me. Today I probably wouldn’t hesitate! That’s partly because I’ve improved as a rider, and partly because I now have a dirt bike with a starter button: if I had stalled out the Honda in the middle of the water I wouldn’t have been able to kick-start it (it was really hard to start under the best of circumstances), so I was reluctant to take any chances.

Back at the parking lot, the people next to us had these great chocks which hold the whole bike upright using just the front wheel. This was a life-changing discovery. Since we were sick of our elaborate tie-down method, I started pushing for us to get these instead! Eventually I just bought a pair of this exact model and we bolted them to John’s trailer, and they really did make our lives vastly better.
