In May 1988 I set out on one of my habitual motorcycle camping trips (throw a tent, a sleeping bag, and some spare gear on the back of a motorcycle and hit the road). This one was from Ithaca, NY to San Francisco, CA; then visiting Yosemite and Sequoia / Kings Canyon (with my parents, who appear in a couple of the photos), down to Los Angeles and around southern California (with John), then (with Mary) up through Yosemite again and on to Idaho, Yellowstone, Minnesota, and up into Canada round the north of the lake and so back to Ithaca.
I had done this sort of trip before, but this was the first time I’d had a camera along, and I was really enthusiastic about getting out of New York State and into the larger landscape. Taking photos is easy when you’re out hiking, which I often was, but forcing myself to stop on the road merely to shoot pictures was quite difficult (when I ride, I like to ride). This trip was a very important training ground for me; I developed most of the photographic vocabulary, habits, and themes that I still prefer today.
