Apache Canyon Rd

Pictures from three visits: 5/17/2009, 5/25/2009 (with Kyle), and 10/10/2011. It’s a dirt road off the 33 at Ventucopa, following a sandy wash. At the end of the road it is possible to continue further up the wash.

Apache Canyon Road. An easy but lovely and fun dirt road, a nice 10-mile charge. After the campground, you’re riding in a sandy wash; in theory you can take this all the way until it meets Quatal Canyon Road, but in fact the sand is such a slog that we’ve never gone more than a couple of miles. And I’ve heard that in fact there’s a landslide blocking the trail to Quatal Canyon Road anyway.

The start of Apache Canyon Road, next to some kind of hay farm.

At the far end of Apache Canyon Road; the only way to continue up is in the wash.

Matt braves the wash. Sorry, no pictures of Matt actually riding in the wash, because he’s alone and carrying the camera. Took a few pictures of what’s up there, though.

This is the second visit. Here we’ve reached the campground at the far end of the road and are hanging out, preparatory to braving the wash.

After we’d both ridden in the wash, I made John ride my bike so he could see that it was handling the wash better than his bike.

John on my bike, having very little difficulty in the wash. We need to figure out why his bike’s steering goes to pieces in sand.

On the way back down the road, about three-quarters of the way. This picture to me sums up why we do what we do. The call of the open road! The scenery! The big sky! It’s all here.
