A ride of 2013:06:09; almost exactly the same ride as the previous ride of three weeks before. The difference is that this time we deliberately set out for Brookshire Campground, in order to explore how far beyond it we’d be allowed to go. The answer: not much! There’s a gate a short way beyond the campground; there’s also a spur road north, but eventually there’s a gate here as well. Still, a lovely place to visit.
A map of this ride, made using my iPhone as a GPS tracker. The places where we turn back are places where there are gates. Having encountered two gates, we retraced our path to the car.
Elevation map of the entire ride. The high point (encountered twice, because the ride is a dead end in the Brookshire campground area) is the top of Sierra Madre Road, where La Brea branches off to the right; the second time we get there, you can see an extra little glitch because we climbed up the little hill to the campground there. The secondary high point is Treplett Mountain. What I find most interesting about this elevation chart is that the Brookshire campground area turns out to be lower than the 166 where parked the car! The whole ride was over 48 miles, a good day’s outing for us.
And here comes John, seen through the wooly blue curls (amazingly artsy-fartsy considering this was taken with my iPhone).

A fantastic view looking south-west. I don’t believe the sea would be visible from here, so the cloudy layer in the distance is probably the Santa Maria area, which is only about 20 miles away.

In the distance you can see the continuation of this road, winding up the hill.

Looking back at our road. Seeing the incredible engineering, I always feel privileged that we are allowed to come here.

At the Miranda Pine campground, literally the high point of the trip.
